In situ viscosity evaluation

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001958

  1. The downhole measurement of a reservoir fluid's resistance to flow under its original pressure and temperature conditions. This evaluation is performed using specialized sensors on wireline formation testing tools, which analyze a sample of fluid drawn directly from the formation into the tool. The measurement is reported in centipoise (cP) and is a direct input for calculating fluid mobility, which is permeability divided by viscosity.

  2. The measurement of a fluid's resistance to flow directly within the reservoir, under native pressure and temperature conditions. This is accomplished using specialized downhole tools, such as wireline formation testers equipped with vibrating elements or optical fluid analyzers, which measure viscosity without altering the fluid's state. In-situ measurements avoid the potential phase changes and inaccuracies that can occur when bringing a heavy oil sample to the surface for laboratory analysis.
