Managed pressure drilling
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002273
An adaptive drilling process that precisely controls the annular pressure profile of the whole wellbore, keeping bottomhole pressure inside the narrow window between pore pressure and fracture pressure. It normally uses a closed, pressurized mud-return path with a rotating control device and a choke, so back pressure, fluid density and flow rate can be adjusted quickly and influx or loss detected early. It contrasts with conventional drilling, where the mud column is open to atmosphere at the bell nipple.
