Mud retort
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002457
A laboratory distillation apparatus that heats a measured mud sample of 10, 20 or 50 mL in a lidded steel cup until the oil and water vaporize, condense and collect in a graduated receiver. The oil and water volumes are read directly, and the solids fraction is found by difference, with a correction for dissolved salt. API Recommended Practices 13B-1 and 13B-2 describe the test, and it supplies the oil/water ratio of an invert emulsion mud.
