Water, oil, and solids test

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004100

A standard measurement of the volume percentages of water, oil and solids in a drilling fluid, made with a retort kit. A measured mud sample, typically 10 or 20 mL, is heated in a steel chamber until its liquids boil off, and the vapor is condensed and collected in a graduated cylinder, where the water and oil volumes are read. The solids volume is found by difference, and the results give the oil-water ratio of invert emulsion muds.
