Settling pit

A large, open pit or tank used to allow drilling fluid to settle, separating solids from the liquid phase. Heavier solids, such as drill cuttings, sink to the bottom, while the cleaner fluid overflows to subsequent compartments or is recirculated. This process is a primary stage in solids control.
