Mud pit

A large, open tank or series of tanks used to store, mix, and treat drilling fluid on a drilling rig. These pits are integral to the circulation system, allowing for the removal of solids, addition of chemicals, and conditioning of the fluid before it is pumped downhole. Modern drilling rigs often use steel tanks rather than excavated earthen pits.
