Suction pit

A compartment within the mud tank system from which the drilling fluid is drawn by the mud pumps and circulated downhole. It is designed to maintain a constant fluid level and prevent air entrainment into the pump suction. The suction pit is the final stage of the mud cleaning system before the fluid is re-circulated.
