Sand trap

A section of the drilling fluid circulation system designed to remove abrasive solids like sand from the mud. It consists of an enlarged tank or pit where the fluid velocity decreases, allowing heavier particles to settle out by gravity. The accumulated sand is periodically removed to prevent wear on pumps and other equipment.
