Spud mud
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003557
A high-viscosity drilling fluid used for the initial, shallow section of a wellbore. Its primary functions are to carry large cuttings generated by the top-hole bit and to seal unconsolidated surface formations, preventing fluid loss and hole collapse. This simple fluid, frequently a mix of bentonite clay and water, is later displaced by a more specialized mud system as drilling progresses into deeper geological zones.
