Spud

To begin drilling a new well by boring the first section of hole with a large-diameter bit, which fixes the spud date. That date is the reference point for counting drilling days and appears in daily drilling reports and in notices to regulators and partners. The first section is then lined with conductor or surface casing before deeper drilling continues.
