Surface pipe

The initial string of casing installed in a well, extending from the surface to a depth sufficient to protect freshwater formations and provide a stable foundation for subsequent drilling operations. It is cemented in place to seal off shallow zones and support the weight of the blowout preventers. This pipe is also known as surface casing.
