Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003573
A full-opening safety valve kept on the rig floor that is screwed into the open top of the drill pipe or tubing when a kick occurs during a trip or connection. Closing it shuts off flow up the string so the well can be controlled. It is a manual ball valve, and crossovers are kept so that its connection matches each pipe thread in use.
