Updip

The direction along a dipping geological layer or structure that is higher in elevation or closer to the surface. Hydrocarbons, being less dense than water, tend to migrate updip within a permeable reservoir rock until they encounter a trap or reach the surface. This migration path is a key consideration in petroleum exploration.
