Variable orifice

A flow control device that allows the size of its opening to be adjusted, thereby regulating the flow rate of a fluid. This adjustment can be manual or automated, responding to changes in pressure or flow demand. Choke valves are a common example of variable orifice devices used in oil and gas production to manage well flow.
