Injection molding

Term · Additive manufacturing and 3D printing · MLC-T-ADM-000184

A manufacturing process that forms parts by injecting molten material, most often a thermoplastic, into a closed mold cavity under pressure and cooling it until it solidifies. As a formative process, it meets additive manufacturing through rapid tooling, where printed molds or inserts give prototype or short-run parts without hardened steel tooling. Printed polymer molds survive only tens to hundreds of shots, against hundreds of thousands for hardened steel tools.
