Active metabolite

A substance produced when a drug is metabolized in the body, which itself possesses pharmacological activity. This metabolite can contribute to or be responsible for the therapeutic or toxic effects of the parent drug. Some prodrugs are designed to be inactive until metabolized into an active form.
