Alternant
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000452
Describing a conjugated hydrocarbon in which the carbon atoms can be conceptually divided into two sets, such that atoms of one set are bonded only to atoms of the other. This structural classification means the molecule contains no odd-membered rings. In the Hückel molecular orbital approximation, alternant hydrocarbons have paired bonding and antibonding orbitals symmetrically distributed about the non-bonding energy level.
