Autoxidation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001012

The spontaneous oxidation of a substance by atmospheric oxygen without the involvement of flame or high temperatures. This process proceeds via a free-radical chain reaction mechanism involving initiation, propagation, and termination steps. Autoxidation is responsible for the degradation of many organic materials, such as the development of rancidity in fats and oils, the aging of plastics, and the deterioration of rubber products.
