Backbiting
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001071
An intramolecular chain transfer reaction in radical polymerization where the propagating radical abstracts a hydrogen atom from a carbon atom within the same polymer chain. This process leads to the formation of a new radical site on the polymer backbone, which can then initiate branching. Backbiting is a common mechanism for short-chain branching in polyethylene synthesis.
