Bioisostere
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001274
A chemical substituent or group that has similar physical or chemical properties to another and produces broadly similar biological effects. Bioisosteres are used in medicinal chemistry to modify a lead compound's properties, such as potency, selectivity, or metabolic stability, while retaining its desired biological activity. Common bioisosteric replacements include hydroxyl for thiol or carboxyl for sulfonyl.
