Botulism
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001450
A rare but severe paralytic illness caused by neurotoxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. These toxins block nerve function, leading to muscle paralysis, which can be life-threatening if respiratory muscles are affected. Botulism can result from contaminated food, wound infection, or colonization of the infant gut.
