Tetanus

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013647

A serious neurological condition characterized by prolonged, involuntary muscle contractions, or spasticity, caused by the neurotoxin tetanospasmin. This toxin is produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani and acts by blocking inhibitory neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, leading to unopposed muscle stimulation. The condition is preventable by immunization with the tetanus toxoid vaccine, which is typically administered in combination with diphtheria and pertussis vaccines.
