Degree of biodisintegration
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002940
The mass fraction of a material that has disintegrated through the action of cells, in practice found by composting the material and weighing the share that passes a sieve of defined mesh, commonly 2 mm. It differs from biomineralization, which measures conversion to inorganic products, and from bioassimilation, which measures conversion into biomass. The compostability standard EN 13432 sets the pass mark at no more than 10 percent of the original dry mass retained on a 2 mm sieve after 12 weeks.
