Electrical harmonicity
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003644
The property of a molecule where its dipole moment changes linearly with respect to its normal coordinates. This linear relationship simplifies the interpretation of vibrational spectra, as it implies that the intensity of fundamental vibrational transitions is directly proportional to the square of the change in dipole moment. It is an idealized condition, with most real molecules exhibiting some degree of electrical anharmonicity.
