Electron pushing

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013063

A symbolic convention used to represent the movement of electrons during a chemical reaction or in the interconversion of resonance forms. Curved arrows, also called curly arrows, are drawn to show the flow of an electron pair from its source (a lone pair or a bond) to its destination (an atom or a new bond position). This formalism provides a visual tool for tracking bond-making and bond-breaking steps in a reaction mechanism.
