Normal stress

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008075

The component of stress that acts perpendicularly to a given surface, either as tension (pulling apart) or compression (pushing together). It is distinct from shear stress, which acts parallel to the surface. In fluid dynamics, normal stress can contribute to phenomena like the Weissenberg effect in viscoelastic fluids.
