Equilibrium partitioning
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004066
The distribution of a chemical substance among different environmental phases or compartments, such as water, sediment, and biota, when the system has reached a state of thermodynamic equilibrium. At equilibrium, the chemical potential of the substance is equal in all phases. This concept is applied in ecotoxicology to predict the bioaccumulation and fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants.
