Harmonic mean
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005110
A type of average that is calculated as the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of the reciprocals of a given set of numbers. It is particularly useful for rates or ratios, such as average speeds or reaction rates. For two numbers, x and y, the harmonic mean is 2xy/(x+y).
