Heterotherm

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005272

An animal that exhibits different thermal relations, behaving as an endotherm at some times and as an ectotherm at others. This strategy allows the organism to conserve energy by allowing its body temperature to fluctuate with the ambient temperature, particularly during periods of inactivity or resource scarcity. Many birds and small mammals, such as bats and hummingbirds, enter a state of torpor or hibernation, which are forms of heterothermy.
