Hirschsprung syndrome
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005310
A congenital condition characterized by the absence of nerve cells (ganglion cells) in a segment of the colon, leading to functional obstruction of the bowel. This lack of innervation prevents the affected part of the intestine from relaxing and moving stool through, causing severe constipation and abdominal distension. Surgical removal of the aganglionic segment is the primary treatment.
