Megacolon

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007142

An abnormal and persistent dilation of the colon that is not caused by a mechanical obstruction. This condition results from paralysis or dysfunction of the colonic smooth muscles, leading to a failure to propel fecal matter and causing severe constipation. Congenital megacolon, as seen in Hirschsprung's disease, is caused by the absence of ganglion cells, while acquired forms result from infection, inflammatory conditions, or toxic exposure.
