Idiosyncrasy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005580
A genetically determined, qualitatively abnormal reaction to a chemical, which is not dose-related in the typical sense and occurs in a small fraction of individuals. This type of adverse response is distinct from both allergy, which involves a specific immune mechanism, and toxicity, which affects most individuals at a sufficient dose. An example is the prolonged muscle paralysis experienced by individuals with a specific genetic trait after receiving the muscle relaxant succinylcholine.
