Inelastic electron tunnelling spectroscopy

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005812

A spectroscopic technique that probes the vibrational modes of molecules adsorbed on a metal surface by measuring changes in the tunneling current across a metal-insulator-metal junction. Electrons tunnel through the insulator, and some lose energy by exciting molecular vibrations. This method provides high-resolution vibrational spectra, particularly for species at interfaces.
