Ion energy loss spectra

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006077

A plot of the number of ions as a function of the kinetic energy they have lost during inelastic collisions with a target, such as a gas, solid, or surface. The incident ions have a well-defined initial kinetic energy, and the spectrum reveals discrete energy losses corresponding to the excitation of specific electronic or vibrational states in the target species. The technique is a form of inelastic ion scattering spectroscopy used to probe the energy levels of atoms and molecules.
