Ion desolvation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006076

The removal of solvent molecules from a solvated ion to form a bare, gas-phase ion. This process is a key step in atmospheric pressure ionization sources, such as electrospray ionization (ESI), where ions are transferred from a liquid solution to the gas phase for mass analysis. The efficiency of desolvation is influenced by factors including gas temperature, gas flow rate, and the nature of the solvent and analyte.
