Sheath gas

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010808

A gas, often nitrogen, used in electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to assist in the nebulization of the sample solution and the desolvation of ions. It flows concentrically around the electrospray capillary, promoting the formation of a stable spray and aiding in the evaporation of solvent from the charged droplets. The flow rate of this gas influences spray stability and ionization efficiency.
