Electrospray ionisation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003791

A soft ionization technique used in mass spectrometry that produces gas-phase ions directly from a liquid solution. A high voltage is applied to the solution as it flows through a capillary, creating a fine aerosol of charged droplets. As the solvent evaporates, the charge density on the droplets increases until ions are ejected into the gas phase, which are then analyzed by the mass spectrometer.
