Drying gas
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003464
An inert gas, such as nitrogen, introduced into an atmospheric pressure ionization source to aid in desolvation of the charged droplets produced by electrospray or other spray ionization techniques. The gas is often heated and flows around the spray, promoting solvent evaporation and the release of gas-phase ions from the droplets before they enter the mass spectrometer. This process increases ion signal and reduces the formation of solvent adducts.
