Charged residue model
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001909
A model describing the formation of gas-phase ions from charged droplets in electrospray ionization. As solvent evaporates, the droplet shrinks and its surface charge density increases until it divides, a process that repeats until a single analyte ion remains in a very small droplet. The final gas-phase ion is formed when the last of the solvent evaporates, which contrasts with the ion evaporation model where ions are ejected directly from the droplet surface.
