Sheath flow interface

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010807

An interface for mass spectrometry where the analyte solution exiting a capillary is surrounded by a coaxial flow of a second liquid, the sheath liquid. This arrangement establishes a stable electrical connection for the electrospray process and allows the introduction of a make-up liquid to modify the solvent conditions before ionization. Typical flow rates are in the nanoliter per minute range for the analyte stream and microliter per minute range for the sheath liquid, making it suitable for coupling capillary electrophoresis with mass spectrometry.
