International unit

A unit of measurement for the amount of a substance, such as a vitamin, hormone, enzyme, or drug, based on its biological activity or effect. This unit is established by an international committee and is specific to each substance, defined by a reference preparation. For example, one International Unit of insulin is defined by its ability to lower blood glucose in a standard animal model.
