Interstitial velocity
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005992
The mean linear speed of the mobile phase through the interstitial space of a packed column, averaged over the whole cross section. Under idealized conditions it equals the nominal linear flow divided by the interstitial fraction, that is the volumetric flow rate divided by the column cross-sectional area times the interstitial fraction. Because the interstitial fraction of a packed bed is about 0.4, it is roughly 2.5 times the nominal linear flow.
