Mean interstitial velocity of the carrier gas

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007074

The mean linear speed of the carrier gas in the spaces between the particles of a packed column, given by the interstitial velocity times the compressibility correction factor j. The interstitial velocity itself comes from dividing the nominal linear flow by the interstitial fraction of the column, whereas j corrects for the gas expanding as the pressure falls along the column.
