Loading dose

An initial higher dose of a drug given at the beginning of treatment to rapidly achieve a therapeutic concentration in the body. This approach is used for drugs with a long half-life or when immediate therapeutic effects are required. It is followed by smaller maintenance doses to sustain the desired drug level.
