Metastable background
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013279
Intensity in a mass spectrum contributed by ions that fragment spontaneously between leaving the ion source and reaching the detector. Such metastable ions are recorded at apparent m/z values that match neither precursor nor product, as in the diffuse peaks at m2²/m1 seen in sector instruments, where m1 is the precursor mass and m2 the product mass.
