Philtrum

The shallow vertical furrow running down the middle of the upper lip from the nose to the lip's edge. It forms during embryonic development from the fusion of facial prominences. A smooth philtrum, with the groove flattened or absent, is one of the facial features used to diagnose fetal alcohol syndrome.
