Pleiotropism

The phenomenon where a single gene affects multiple, seemingly unrelated phenotypic traits. This occurs when a gene product is involved in several different biochemical pathways or developmental processes. An example is Marfan syndrome, where a mutation in a single gene affects the skeletal, cardiovascular, and ocular systems.
