Pleura

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009038

A serous membrane that enfolds the lungs and lines the thoracic cavity. It consists of two layers: the visceral pleura, which covers the lung surface, and the parietal pleura, which lines the chest wall. The space between these layers, the pleural cavity, contains a thin film of fluid that lubricates lung movement during respiration.
