Mediastinum

The central compartment of the thoracic cavity, located between the two pleural sacs containing the lungs. It houses vital organs such as the heart, great vessels, trachea, esophagus, and thymus gland. This region extends from the sternum to the vertebral column and from the thoracic inlet to the diaphragm.
