Thymus

A primary lymphoid organ situated in the mediastinum, behind the sternum and between the lungs. It is the site of T lymphocyte maturation, where precursor cells differentiate into functional T cells capable of recognizing specific antigens. The thymus is most active during childhood and gradually atrophies after puberty.
